Aoife grew up in Limerick and developed a passion for outdoor
recreation while volunteering with community centres
throughout the 2010s. She wasn't starting from some grand
master plan — it began with helping older adults reconnect
with nature, and that's where the real learning happened.
People taught her what actually works and what doesn't.
After completing her Environmental Science degree at the
University of Limerick in 2010, she spent five years as a
Parks and Recreation Officer with Limerick City Council. That
role was formative. She collaborated on the restoration and
accessibility improvements to People's Park, working with
contractors, engineers, and most importantly, with the
community members who'd actually use these spaces. It's one
thing to have a plan on paper. It's another entirely to watch
someone try to navigate a path they're supposed to be
enjoying.
Her career shifted toward content creation when she recognised
a genuine gap in the market. There's plenty of generic outdoor
information, but almost nothing tailored specifically for
older adults or people with mobility considerations. And the
few resources that exist tend to be either overly cautious or
vaguely unhelpful. She wanted to change that.
Since moving into editorial work at sigmaportfolio Limited, she's
led workshops on sustainable trail usage and worked
extensively with local heritage groups to document the Shannon
estuary's ecological and historical significance. Her approach
combines rigorous practical research — she personally walks
every route multiple times across seasons — with consultation
from physiotherapists, accessibility experts, and the
community members who actually know these spaces best.
